Don't get me wrong, I think the DNF% is a great idea, but I think it's hard for some people to actually keep in a game. I personally just have a really bad connection. If they could come up with some way to know whether or not they lost connection or just chose to leave, that'd be great. But that'd be harder than it sounds...

I agree, ways to reduce collatteral damage would be awesome, but it'd be nearly impossible.
Disconnections due to bad connection, well, people will abuse this by simply turning off their router/modem, and they've left the game scot-free, or maybe using this lag witch thing what ever it is (I imagine some box with a litteral switch, or button on it. lol) to lag themselves out. I don't put anything past anyone considering the fragile egos I've seen on the internet.
There is one way I can think of to help reduce the collatteral damage, though not all of it. It's to detect if the host disconnects, or not. If the host disconnects only the host gets a DNF penalty. No one else in the match is affected no matter what.
Perhaps something to help get people with similar connection speeds together to prevent connection failures in a game might help, I don't know.

Look, ever since I got this game I had to leave the game and turn the system off only two times. I was suddenly told my DNF% was too high and that I would be punished for this by not earning career points for the next 7 games, and I had never even been told what DNF% was. So I don't care about "the bigger picture". All I know is that I played the game, never cheated, and was punished for it.

Well, my advice is to play those 7 games, keep playing until your DNF is back to 0, and make sure you don't have to leave within 10-15 minutes. Or host player matches with minimum time to help lower your DNF faster while finishing those games.

I know how to reduce DNF%, my point is that that every solution you people are thinking of is just that: a solution to the problem of DNF%. All it does is eliminate a very small problem while making a much bigger one.

Then eliminate your DNF percent, and don't get it again. <.<
I guess they could tell you what DNF does beforehand, I guess.
What's the "Bigger" problem it makes?
And since when is people bailing on you a SMALL problem? They force you to lose when they leave your team short handed. And if your team even breathes wrong people would bail without DNF.
People bail regardless of DNF, still, but I think it's a lot less thanks to DNF, and I'm gad DNF is there.
Most importantly, do you have a better soloution to prevent people bailing on a game?

"Then eliminate your DNF percent, and don't get it again." That's the point, I don't TRY to get it, but sometimes I have to quit an online game without being able to finish it. And as I said before, the bigger problem it makes is harshly punishing decent gamers like you, me, and many other people who aren't going to cheat. Also I'm not saying bailing isn't a problem, I'm saying that the solution is flawed. I actually do have a solution that is the same as DNF%, but instead of stopping you from earning career points, you would be prevented from promoting or working towards promoting your player rank for a few games if you quit too many times. This would remove the incentive to bail while not harshly punishing gamers who aren't cheating.

Might as well, once everyone has played this game enough to get all 5 characters at Lv 99. Career Points aren't going to matter, just Player Ranks.

That's seriously flawed! What will stop people from bailing in faction matches? Or Player matches? If they never play ranked matches it won't affect them at all. Then we're just going to end up addled with people bailing all the time in those modes coz they have nothing to lose, and they'll pretty much be ruined.
It's not harsh punishment, it just makes us manage our time better. The penalties start at 30%. Get it below that, and stay there and you should be gold.
What's 7 quick matches Vs the rest of your time playing in some security that if your team's points dip at all that everyone won't bail when there's a chance to win?
Lets face facts. If Career points weren't almost universally useful no one would be here compining about DNF. They prolly wouldn't care about DNF at all if it didn't affect career points. I think it's doing it's job. Maybe not perfectly, but there's certainly more benefit than harm. Especially if you look out for yourself.
