I'm thinking it'll be by "race" of pirates (Jungle, Vagabundo, Snow, Nevec, etc.). Very interesting info.
That's what I was thinking, more on the lines of a campaign battles where players get to choose which side they want to be on. Kinda like versus in Left 4 Dead, where you could be the infected, or the survivors n' stuff.

I didn't play the first LP online so forgive me if this already exists, but factions could also mean something along the lines of a clan tag/clan emblem.

Ok, I'm getting a lead on something here. Pause at 1:00 on cc's video:
You can clearly see that there are 5 seperate faction logos on the screen, each at Level 1. He appears to have selected the Mercenary faction right now, though two below could be made out to be Snow Pirates and NEVEC. So if you brace yourself, I am gonna perform a horrid speculation here.
You get to choose a faction you want to play as, and you can switch back and forth at will. These factions will have nothing to do with the looks of your character since you can customize your character how you want. The reason behind it is that each faction has it's own unique set of unlockables associated with it. So you level up on each faction to get all the unlocks. There is also some form of prestige mode. As you can tell there are two circles next to each faction logo. They idicate which level of prestige you are on. Further mode, multiplayer is no longer silent. There will be voices telling you stuff like in other shooters, and the voice varies depending on your faction. Also the templates for the menu and such alter with faction.
Ok, there's what I'd think at first glance. Really curious. Can't seem to think of any other logical reasoning as to why you'd have 5 different sets of stats to choose from.
Wow, that would be incredible. I noticed those but didn't really pay enough attention.
One is clearly NEVEC, I think the farthest left on the bottom is the Snow Pirate symbol, and I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the heart one on the far right is the "Femme Fatale" faction. The two dots may be the perks you are talking about, you have a choice between two perks or possibly being able to unlock and enable both.
Let's think about it, the definite groups we know of so far are (from text on the LP2 site):
Mercenaries, New Nevec, Vagabundos, Jungle Pirates, Carpetbaggers.
5 groups, 5 symbols.
There are more groups shown than written about which are:
Sandraiders, Waysider Femme Fatale and Snow Pirate Elites.
That's all I got for now.
Waysider. Gunsword. Magnum.

Sandraiders are the Vagabundos. Femme Fatale only means the female version, and Waysider seems more like a visual style than a faction. Never heard of the Snow Pirate Elites before, but if you mean the guys who come from the snow area into the jungle area in episode one, those are the mercenaries.

Just wanted to say, you don't have the option to select from the different factions (at least not in this demo).
All the speculation in my post is taken from the menu video and the website.
For some reason the website isn't loading up for me, but I'm fairly certain that the Vagabundos and Sand Raiders are separate groups, and that the Snow Pirate Elites are separate from the Mercenaries.

Sandraiders are not the Vagabundos. Vagabundos are the Mexican-Style pirates that hijack the carrier in episode 5. Sandraiders are the guys you fight in episode 3. Waysiders are the Bandit group that fights the Sandraiders in the sand village and on the train(I think). Snow Pirate Elites are just what their name suggest(you see one operating the Rail Cannon Train in the beginning of the Universal Sizzle Trailer).
Go to the official site, and click on the pirate and you can scroll through and see them.
Probably something to do with the teams (like if they allow more than two teams again they will be different factions instead of colors), or how your person looks, something to do with clans, or something else.
