I'm not doing so hot against this flying akrid.  I've been jumping in the VS and getting two gattling guns and just blasting it as much as possible.  I see the energy go down slowly, but I don't exactly know where to shoot it to hurt it.  I think I'm only getting lucky right now.  Any help...thanks.

There's a REALLY EASY way to kill the Wasp boss. This works on ALL difficulties.
(This will make hard and extreme a cake walk)

Don't start out aiming for his glowing belly. Start on his wings. Pick a side. Make sure you have a gatling gun on one side and a shotgun on the other. After a little bit of shooting you'll see is wings start to tear up. Keep going....

Then suddenly, after a bit more, his wings will break apart and he will nose dive to the ground. Run up to him and unload with the shotgun. He will also drop a ton of energy. After a bit he will get back up. But by now he should be between 25 and 50%. Afterwords he will get a lot faster and the trick will be more difficult to do again, But thats OK. Stay around the tall rock. Likely he will still destroy your VS suit. Not a problem. Just grab another.
(On extreme there is only one extra suit) Head over to where you came into the map. Jump over the cliff and you should see another VS suit buried in the snow. Grab it and finish him off. (Don't forget to grab the extra energy tank right beside it) After grabbing the 2nd (or third VS depending on the difficulty) just unload on the glowing section.

If by some chance you STILL haven't haven't killed the wasp and your last VS gets destroyed, that's OK. Grapple up to the top of the tall rock. Grab the rocket launcher. Finish the job. You should only have to hit him one or two more times.

An alternate strategy, which seemed to work fairly well ( killed it my 1st try at least) was 1st get the VS unburied, then put that lazer rifle on it. hop up and keep the big rock between the 2 of you untill youre lazer is all the way charged, the wasp has one attack (i didnt really pay attention to what it was exactly) where it just pauses and hovers for a second, use tha time to pop out and let fly with your charged shot. it took me about 5 or 6 fully charged shots to get it really POed at me, then it was going too fast for the lazer so i did like you said and climbed up on the rock, got a RL, and basically went kamikaze, i just stood there taking the attacks till it opened itself up again, it only took 1 rocket at about 30% life to finish it off.
(note i DO NOT reccommend just sitting there and taking the attacks, i BARELY survived, and really hadnt PLANNED on winning, it just worked out that way XD)

I had the best luck by mounting rocket launchers on both sides of the VS.  On hard it takes about 8 direct hits on the thorax to drop the bug.  But it is easy to predict what he will do:

1) When it is not too hurt it likes to spit out exploding Trilids.  When its thorax moves up, let loose with a rocket and it will contact it just as the Trilids come out.

2) When it flies real far away and dashes at you, press Y to use the high jump of the GTB-22, and the wasp will miss you.  Then it will pause long enough for you to get 2 good shots in.

3) After that is gets real angry and hard to hit.  A couple more hits does it in.
