Locked: Too much content for one disk?

Capcom has publically lamented having to cut large amounts of content from Lost Planet 2 in order to fit it onto the Xbox 360’s piddling DVD capacity without the game turning into a swapfest, but promises users will be able to buy everything they cut as DLC.

Speaking with rag Famitsu about the production of Lost Planet 2, now in the fine-tuning stages, producer Jun Takeuchi complains of the constraints imposed by Microsoft’s refusal to employ Blu-ray; in previous interviews he made much the same comments about Resident Evil 5, saying he would like to see a “complete” version on the PS3…

Did the development go well?

There weren’t any big problems. More troubling than any development problems was having to keep cutting out content.

We included a lot in this release, and by the end it became a battle with the disc capacity.

Truly, we were weeping as we were forced to cut stuff.

That stuff might be available as DLC in the future – look forward to it.

Buying content which Capcom couldn’t fit onto the Xbox 360’s DVD as DLC – certainly something to look forward to.

So instead of using more than one disk, we're going to have to pay for DLC? Great. I hope there isn't a "Gold" or "Super" or "Colonies" edition of Lost Planet 2.

Hopefully at least most of the DLC is free or cheaper than 1600 Microsoft points...(Equivalent of $20 U.S.)

I sure hope not...I'm geussing that they can fit it all on PS3, but they could still just go off to the other direction...Undecided

Another report on the same issue taken form Kotaku:

"The PS3's Blu-ray format offers developers plenty of space to fill. But the Xbox 360 doesn't use Blu-ray, it uses DVD. That makes things tricky if a studio is planning to release a multi-platform title like Lost Planet 2.

In a recent interview, Lost Planet 2 producer Jun Takeuchi said Capcom had to cut a significant amount from the game. When asked how development was going, he replied, "There wasn't especially any big trouble. More than those kind of difficulties, the edited content was way too much and dealing with that was more difficult than anything."

"This time, truly, the content that was cut was significant," Takeuchi added, "and at the end, we had to wrestle with disc space."

Takeuchi went on to expand on how difficult it was to make those cuts, saying that it was a situation in which the team was on the verge of crying as they shaved down their game to fit on the disk — though Takeuchi is most likely being facetious. The upside to these cuts? "I think we could be able to add that content at a later date as downloadable content." Everybody wins!"

A cynical person could see this as just a way to get more money out of people through DLC as they could easily make this a multi disc game and they wouldn't have to cut anything. They could have one disc for multi player and one for campaign.

Forza 3 comes on 2 discs and that game sucks, I know cause I just paid $60 for it last month to test with a wheel setup. You install the 5gigs and change out the "extra content" DVD and then run the game from the primary DVD. Of course the publisher eats the expense of the extra disc and packaging insert, and it's pretty clear Capcom is not interested in doing that with regards to the 360 release.

The thing that sucks about DLC (aside from the fees) is it fragments the community, more specifically any matchmaking options. Even if DLC was free you'd still have those people who didn't buy it, and any matchmaking system needs to account for their lack of content.

I think Capcom realized this with LP by releasing Colonies instead of a bunch of DLC, but it was pretty clear to me all those years post release that it was an awful strategy. There are barely any games to be played in Colonies and the 1 time I tried to play with a group from here, with Snow, I couldn't because they were all playing Lost Planet and I had just purchased Colonies. Asinine, I believe that is the word for such a situation in the context of attempting to enjoy a videogame.

Gears 2 is another example of awful crap, even though I bought it new I was pretty pissed I had to put in a code to redeem DLC remakes of 3 other Gears 1 maps... like anyone cared? Guess what happened, all my friends got on to play the game and half of them didn't bother to download the crap, so none of us ever played them. It'd be hilarious except it was actually supposed to be an incentive to drive new purchases of the game, then down the road they come out with a few $20 map packs and they even scrapped plans for a Halo 2-style map pack DVD release. It's just a dumb thing to do in this day and age.

In the end I suppose I'd rather see them charge for DLC because releasing a directors cut or analagous "colonies" edition with LP2 would be a travesty Cry

Anyway, let us not forget that the LP2 demo on 360 was 300MB and change, so I am still very excited to see what they can pack into the DVD... but if the "definitive" version is only available on the PS3... well then I will just have to buy one Money mouth

I sure hope there is because I'm not going to buy a crippled "standard" edition on PS3 unless it actually has all the cut content (from Xbox 360) already in on the disc. Guess I will have to wait another year after the game's release to find out though. I hate dlc and I hate expensive dlc even more.

I'm tired of paying full price for half the game

I really hope they do that. It probably won't happen now because they know they can just make more money by making it DLC. (no offence Capcom)

Since they are saying it'll come out as DLC hopefully it won't be another game in whole(im sure they wont make that mistake). If anything it'll be stuff like excluded costumes, maybe a game mode, or even story elements. what i mean is think of the DLC for Gears2. Instead of making a "Colonies" type Gears2(cause lets face it, the game has enough bugs for that to happen), they just updated the crap out of it and put new maps and a new story chapter in the game. I'm pretty sure if Epic can release an update that completely changes weapon effects and what not, then I'm confident that Capcom can/will just update broken weapons, glitches or whatever through updates and DLC and not waste time in making another Colonies style edition.

And yeah I know it sucks that there's stuff that's getting cut out to begin with, but hell I've waited for this game far too long and to be perfectly honest, cutting some stuff out is not phasing me right now like it would have last year because right now I just want to see how good it looks on my HDTV lol. And Im sure the MOST important stuff didnt get cut out.

P.S: I don't think everything is gonna be on the PS3 either. Not that they can't, I just don't think they would. But maybe some of this DLC will be free. One can only hope Sealed. Not that I wouldn't pay for it, it's just Gears screwed it's fans over BIG time with the same concept, so i don't that to be the case in this situation.
